Solar Cookers

August 2013 FoM sponsored Solar cooker training in Monze. the cookers are made from waste cardboard reflecting the sun's heat. They can cook a meal in one and a half hours, and even bake a cake!

Benefits of solar cookers:-

  • good for the environment as no charcoal or firewood is needed

  • frees women from collecting firewood

  • girls in child headed households have more time for school

  • Solar cookers can be made to generate income.

Deana as a health visitor is very aware of child safety and was upset to see many toddlers who had suffered burns as they stayed close to their mothers while the mother cooked on an open fire.  No fireguards here! Food can be left to cook in a solar cooker so there is less danger of painful and damaging scalds.
