Permaculture Gardening
We plan to establish a large garden in every school we help.
The gardens are places of learning not only for the pupils and teachers but also for the whole community.
In 2018-19 Friends of Monze provided training for 10 local farmers, including Warren, from Zambia Women and Girls Foundation, to become permaculture gardening trainers. Here they are learning to make bokashi, a fermented soil enhancer. These permaculture gardening teachers now demonstrate what they learned in their own gardens, and teach other farmers to grow food using home made bokashi saving the expense of buying commercial chemical fertiliser.
In February 2024 drought caused crops to wither die. Farmers told us they harvested nothing.
We are teaching farmers to grow drought resistant crops like cassava, and teaching rain water management.
We have trained 30 farmers in 4 remote drought stricken communities to grow drought resistant crops and given them cuttings. Our partners will be monitoring the farms to help them dproduce a good harvest in the future.
Videos demonstrated water management to prevent soil erosion.
