Hambalamatu School 2024

Hambalamatu School in a rural area had one small classroom for 3 classes teaching 58 girls and 69 boys from 5 years old to the end of Grade1(8 years old). The school only had 5 books. Children dopped out of education after Grade 1 if they could not manage to walk to another school.
Monze Department of Education deployed  one qualified teacher, there are 2 volunteer teachers.
In June 2024, a Friends of Monze trustee visited Hambalamatu with our partners Zambia Women and Girls Foundation. Many people from 5 villages and 4 Headmen met us asking for help to build a school. The community had prepared kilns of fired bricks, river sand and crushed stones.
The school had no water so the first thing Friends of Monze did to help was drill a bore hole with a hand pump.

Men and women from the community worked as volunteers helping the contractor to build a beautiful new 3 classroom block, complete with offices and storerooms.

To improve education, we donated desks and books and built a house for the teacher. To improve health we built pit latrine toilets.
